Springer was delivered from the hospital in a Willys (pronounced "Willis") Jeep, the original style of Jeep that made its debut in World War II, and grew up loving them from there. The first Saturday in October, Springer will be sharing his love of all things Willys at the Southeast Willys Jeep Get Together, which will be held from 10am to 3pm at the Grace Arts Center Pavilion in Mills River. More than 30 old Willys Jeeps, from multiple states, will be on display Saturday representing originals, restorations and modified models in varying conditions from "rust buckets to trailer queens," including the popular World War II restoration and civilian models from 1941-1964. Willys history buffs and newcomers alike will be able to pop the hoods, kick the tires and see up close the mechanical workings of the Willys Jeeps on display. Military, CJs, wagons, truck and forward-control Jeeps are expected to be there, among others. The original Willys Jeep was created for the military during World War II. Designed in only 18 hours by Karl Probst, a freelance auto designer from Detroit, the prototype arrived 30 minutes before the government deadline. In all, 660,703 Jeeps were built for World War II. Jeep continued producing civilian Willys up through 1964. It's just a cool, cool story, Springer said. And how all that ties into our history, our economics, our American design, entertainment, travel, safety and all. Its great to be part of this historical event. Exhibitors tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of. Visitor tickets for the Get-Together can be purchased at the gate for $5, with children under 6 admitted free.
